U.S.S. Estes Operation BlueNose
Point Barrow, Alaska Expedition, 1953

TO TASK FORCE NINE

It was anticipated from the start that this would be a difficult and hazardous operation with fog, bad weather, and ice the obstacles to be overcome. Each of the three enemies has been more formidable than expected, with heavy ice the most dangerous.

In spite of all obstacles you have delivered your cargo safely, and sooner than the most optimistic dates predicted. At Point Barrow all backhaul carg was loaded successfully, in defiance of wretched boating conditions, cold, ice, and fog.

This is a great achievement, of which you can all be justly proud. Every emergency situation - and they were numerous - has been met and overcome with leadership, seamanship, and teamwork in the best traditions of the United States Navy.

To all of you my thanks, and a hearfelt well done.
