Tullio DeRubbio

My father-in-law, now deceased, told me he was on the Estes but to my best recollection it was just after the war ended. He did say he went to China. His name was Tullio DeRobbio and he was an officer and eventually retired as a Commander. He did say when he was on the ship it was a Flagship. Any information, if found, would be great for my family and his great grand-children. I do know when they returned to the US my mother-in-law was at a reception with my father-in-law in San Diego, and my father ended up dancing with Madam Chiang Kai-shek, when she was approached by “CINCPAC” (?) trying to persuade her to keep her husband in the Navy. Her response was he has to go back to RI to take over the family business.

I remember him saying: One time he was on watch on the bridge and was there for 17 hours straight not saying a thing and doing his job until someone, possibly the Captain, saw him and “chewed” someone else for him not being relieved.

Mark Newton (son-in-law)
